Board Meeting Updates!!!

This just in, we're moving our meetings soon!

Every winter, the OPP Board migrates southeast to the warmer environs of the Orinda Library Gallery Room. In October-March, unless the weather is spectacular or there is an extenuating circumstance, our meetings will be at that location on the second Monday of the month at 7pm.

Also, we've had a couple queries lately about board meetings and procedures. Here are some important notes for all members:

1. The Bylaws that govern our pool, Orinda Park, Inc.,  are available on the website (CLICK HERE) for all members to review at any time.

2. The Bylaws guarantee that any member can request the minutes of any board meeting by simply contacting the Secretary (secretary@orindaparkpool.org)

3. While our monthly board meeting are closed affairs where we discuss the fascinating business of heater maintenance and plaster cracks, we always reserve the first half hour for members to attend and make comments.

3a. BUT, don't wait for a board meeting! Just email board@orindaparkpool.org at any time for a more timely response to questions and concerns.

3b. AND, once per year we have an annual membership meeting. This is usually a brief affair with some words from the President and the election of new board members. Which brings us to...

Annual Member Meeting and Board Election

Tuesday, November 12, 2024

Please save the date to attend our annual member meeting and board election on Tuesday, November 12, 2024 at 7pm at the Orinda Library Gallery Room.

This year we have three board positions up for election and the nominating committee has identified three candidates to fill them. Please read through the statements below and come show your support in November.

SECRETARY

Jake Blackshear (Incumbent)

My family has deep roots at OPP! Lauren grew up swimming here and was even a lifeguard in college. Now our two boys (10 and 13) spend almost every waking minute here in the summers, swimming at OMPA and repping OPP all over town. In addition to my 4 years of experience serving as the secretary at OPP, I have over 17 years of experience in nonprofit management at UCSF. It has been a pleasure to deepen my own connection to OPP over the past few years and I would love to continue supporting the organization by serving as secretary for another term.

MEMBERSHIP

Ari Hatton

I’m Ari Hatton and I would be honored to join Orinda Park Pool’s Board as Membership co-chair.

I truly believe Orinda Park Pool has a touch of magic.  The grounds are beautiful. The pool is enormous. The membership community has a chill vibe and the swim team cultivates strong bodies and good hearts.  My blood runs blue with how much I love this pool!

I live just a few houses away from OPP and you can find my two Stingrays (Kate 13 and Robby 11) there all summer long.  I’ve served on the Wagner Ranch Parent’s Club board and am currently on the board for Orinda Intermediate.  Volunteering in my community is very important to me and nothing would make me prouder than serving the pool I love so much.

Efficiency, organization, a positive attitude and a willingness to roll my sleeves up are just a few of the traits I think will be assets to this role.  I would love your vote.

SPECIAL PROJECTS

Ghazaleh Afshar

I would be interested in the special projects position on the board.  Managing capital improvements for the pool is an exciting project that would allow me to use my strengths as a manager and hopefully leave improvements that my community and I can enjoy for many years to come.  I was the Chief of Gynecologic surgery for many years at 2 large hospitals and enjoyed the responsibilities that came with the position.  Management and finding common ground are skills of mine.  Also, I have done various size projects in my home and am very comfortable working with contractors and holding them accountable both to their timelines and cost projections.

The OPP Cafe Is Shutting Down for the Year

Some of you have already noticed that the cafe has been empty on most days for the past several weeks.  With very low pool attendance, even lower cafe sales, and other projects that the cafe staff were focused on, the group that ran our cafe near the second half of the year decided that they needed to close up shop for the remainder of the season.  They might come back for an occasional taco Tuesday (look for them in the newsletter), but we likely will not be seeing our wonderful cafe crew for the rest of the year. We apologize if this impacts anyone's plans for the last month and a half.

Let's Close Out the Pool in Style!

More specific plans will be released soon, but the party will be open to all members and is slated to cost $10 per attendee.  Please try to make this super spooooky event--which is 100% kid friendly.

Practice Updates

Fall clinics are underway!  Just a reminder that they'll run September 3 through October 24thPractices will be held Monday-Thursday.  Practices are 4:00 to 4:45 for 6-8 year olds, and from 4:45 to 5:45 for 9&Ups.

Please note that these practices are open to all members of the swim team.  You can drop in whenever you're free.  The coaches and team just want to keep everyone swimming and working on their craft.

ALSO, these practices are great for our Meadow Halloween Meet on October 13th--which you can register for NOW.  Keep swimming kiddos!
