It's GoooOOOO Time at OPP!

The first big weekend of swim team is upon us.  Please keep in mind that there are several swim team events that will impact pool access and the surrounding grounds.  On Saturday, the swim team is hosting a big social event for all of the swim team families that registered.  On Sunday, we have our first swim meet.  The pool is closed for recreational/lap swimming during the home meets, but ministinger and non-swim team families are always encouraged to stop in and cheer on the swimmers.  This meet might be particularly interesting for any families who are still on the fence about joining the team--or want to get their ministingers ready for advancing later in the year. Just be prepared to use the shuttles for the meet if you haven't attended one of these events before.

Tie Dye and Ice Cream Social Update for Saturday

Saturday from 1-3pm we have our swim team tie-dye & ice cream social event. For every child who was marked as attending on TeamUnify by the deadline, we have one t-shirt for them to tie-dye. If you did not indicate yet that your child will be attending, you are welcome to come, but please bring something to dye.

Note: If your child is 6 and under please stay with your swimmer and help them with their tie-dye and ice cream sundae.

Looking forward to kicking off the OPP Social season together this Saturday!

10 Tips/Reminders for Time Trials and All Swim Meets

1. Invite friends and family to the event.  We love to see big crowds cheering on the kiddos.

2. Bring a black or blue sharpie to write down swim/heat/lane information on arms--this can be very helpful.

3. Have your swimmers come in their uniforms--and bring two pairs of the items that your swimmers use (caps, goggles, towels, etc.)

4. Bring layers for your swimmers, it will be freezing in the morning, then warm during the afternoon.

5. There will be lots of food and coffee for purchase at the pool if you would like to eat there during the meet.

6. Expect to get to the event a little before the "be there time" so swimmers can warm up and get settled into the event.

7. If the parking lot is full when you arrive, drop off the swimmers with their gear, and head down the hill to find a spot.  DO NOT PARK ON THE STREETS THAT SAY "NO PARKING."  You should park near the bottom of El Toyonal, or on Orinda Way.  Shuttle drivers will take you up.

8. Have a returning swim team family help you with the apps that you can use to follow along during the meet.

9. Be mindful of the swim schedule and announcements so you can get your kids to where they need to be in order to not miss their swims.

10. Let your coaches coach when your kids are poolside, your job is to cheer on your kiddos and be there for them after their swims--with a towel.

Getting To Know Our Pool

We're back!!!  This week, we have the chance to learn more about our third coach for the year, coach Erin Byrne.  You'll see coach Erin running many practices this year, and she also takes on many additional duties for the pool.  We hope you enjoy getting to know more about her!

*Coach Erin is the one on the right hand side.

Q: Where did you grow up?

A: Orinda

Q: Did you compete on a swim team when you were a kid?

A: I swam at Meadow growing up, and got to come back for a bonus year after my freshman year in college (shout out good swim birthdays!)

Q: Did you ever swim in high school?  Or college?

A: Swam in high school (for coach Brad!) and then played water polo at LMU all 4 years

Q: What other sports did you participate in during your childhood?

A: Any sport I could. Water polo, soccer, tennis, basketball, volleyball…but eventually learned I’m a water person through and through.

Q: How long have you been coaching at OPP?

A: This will be my 10th summer at OPP!

Q: What are some of your favorite strokes and favorite things to teach as a coach?

A: My absolute favorite stroke is backstroke, but I also used to love distance freestyle. I love getting down to the fundamentals of strokes and breaking them down to their foundation to improve technique and efficiency.

Q: Do you have any additional things you do during the swim season?

A: I’m working on getting my License as a marriage and family therapist, and continue to study and do trainings to better help the kids I work with in the swim season. And have movie nights and nachos with coach Quinn if we don’t have a swim meet.

Q: What other things do you do in the offseason?

A: I work at a high school as a school based therapist in Acalanes school district during the school year, and am planning on starting my own practice soon.

Q: What are some of your favorite things to do in your free time?

A: Anything that gets me outside, I love hiking, running (with coach Quinn, but it’s more like me chasing her and trying to keep up…), going to the beach, camping trips, or hanging out with my dog Wylie and two cats Chloe and Allie

Q: Do you have any close friends or family that are at OPP?

A: Brad was my math teacher and coach long before I came to OPP, and I think we have one of the best coaching staffs in the league and feel so lucky to get to coach with every one of them! And nothing compares to singing karaoke and breaking out into random dance parties with coach Quinn on deck.

Q: Any final words of advice for our swim team members that want to make the most out of this swim year?

A: Come and talk to your coaches after your race! We love when swimmers come and talk to us and check in about how they did, and we love hyping you up and giving you a high five after you’ve worked so hard! And definitely remember to have fun!! GooooooOOOOOOOOO PARK!
